Congratulations to Mario Ortez for receiving the 2025 Rising Star Award from the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association!

This prestigious award honors outstanding early-career professionals under 35 who are making significant contributions to the food and agribusiness sector — and Mario is a shining example of innovation and leadership in the industry.
Ortez is the Collegiate Assistant Professor of Agribusiness and Entrepreneurship and James A. and Renae C. Pearson Collegiate Faculty Fellow for the Kohl Centre at Virginia Tech.
He brings a wealth of experience to his role. Grounded in the food and agricultural sector, he has worked in academia, the private sector, and as an entrepreneur. With a background in agricultural investment and the meat industry, Ortez has deep expertise in the field.
Having owned a farm for a decade, he understands the challenges and rewards of running a business firsthand. He is dedicated to sharing his knowledge with students. Ortez's goal is to inspire and guide future agribusiness practitioners, supporting them in their learning journey at Virginia Tech and preparing them as leaders once they graduate.
"It’s an honor to receive the IFAMA Rising Star Award. This recognition reflects the collaborative work I’m privileged to pursue in the agri-food space. I’m proud to contribute to a global community that’s driving innovation and resilience in food and agriculture — especially by helping prepare the next generation of agribusiness leaders. Thanks to IFAMA for championing cross-sector collaboration and supporting emerging voices in this field." Mario Ortez
